CD-R King Wireless-N Universal Repeater CW-150MBPS-R

Wireless-N Universal Repeater CW-150MBPS-R
(front)
I wanted to improve my router's range but was not able to successfully do so with the CD-R King Wireless-N Universal Repeater, model: CW-150MBPS-R.  Now, this gives you the impression of a simple set-up that will link you to an existing router and will have you surfing the net in matter of minutes.

That was not the case with me and this universal repeater, I was tinkering with it from 9pm until midnight and early morning and I still wasn't able to get it to work with my buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH.

Now, not to give a bad image to this repeater, it worked when we tested it on the CD-R King store.  It is just not compatible with my router.  It works if you plug the Ethernet connection to the router.  But what good will it be, if the location you want is very far and you don't want to see any cable running along the hallway?

So there you go, this repeater works. It just doesn't work with the buffalo brand model WZR-HP-G300NH.  It may work with other routers.  So if you plan to buy this repeater, maybe you should bring your router with you to the CD-R King Store to really test if they are compatible.  If the technician there isn't busy, they can help you configure it and you can use it immediately when you get home.

There was still plenty of stocks left, last time I was there in CD-R King Farmer's Plaza Cubao Branch in Araneta Center, Quezon City, Philippines.  They are on the ground floor, near EDSA middle entrance, should you decide to check out that branch when you are in the Cubao, Q.C. area.

  1. Hi,

Thanks for your useful review, am currently considering buying this model! I've got an idea as to why your Buffalo router might not be compatible with the product. Seems your router is a high end box presumably running the latest WiFi protocol at '802.11n(40MHz): up to 150Mbps 2.400Ghz' rather than the 802.11n(20MHz) or more widely used 'g' standard? Could this be why they are not compatible?

    Maybe the Cd-r King:
    WR-NET-006-LO(LP-8618S)
    Indoor Wireless-N Smart Repeater AP
    Php 1,080.00
would work with your Buffalo router. Did you consider / try this? I note it is better tested and supports the faster 'n' WiFi protocols.

Did you manage to find a repeater that worked with your Buffalo, or just use a ethernet cable to connect to the Cd-r King box?

    Steve

  2. Hi, Steven.

Thanks for reading my review.. I actually returned the product and exchange it for something else. I actually search online for a solution, but it has been said that the standards or protocols used by each wireless device do not match at times making it hard for all the device work as it should.

I also changed the Mhz from 40 to 20 to automatic.. nothing works. Trust me.. I tried all i can on that device, it just wont work and I was kind of expecting it to work without me doing much configuration.

If I still have it, I would have used a cable, there won't be any signal lost on the other room that way.

    1. check the ip address of your router if it is the same with the repeater, i got also the buffalo router with same ip address of this repeater (192.168.11.1), i changed the ip address of my repeater to 192,167.11.1), and it works fine.

  3. Thanks for your response Felix. So it sounds like you exchanged it for something completely different and have given up for now on extending your WiFi range. So the 20Mhz option didn't help huh. We'd be extending an older 'g' standard WiFi network but register your experience about general incompatibilities! I think we'll still buy the newer Cd-r King box (WR-NET-006-LO) and give it a shot. Will let u know if it works or not! Cheers, Steve

  4. Hi again Felix, so the better Wi-Fi repeater at Cd-r King wasn't available so i ended up buying the same as you, the CW-150MBPS-R. Had lots of fun with this little box! After pulling my hair out for many hours, have finally got it properly working. Sometimes it takes a while to get a connection to the main router (the first hop on the local WiFi is much faster to establish a connection) but after lots of messing around it works with the base b/g network we have here. Not the most solid unit but finally did the trick! Seems with this box once you've set up the main AP network setting you can't configure anything else, so you have to do this last, maybe you had the same experience? Steve

    1. Hi Steven, good for you. You have it working, I really can't remember what I did with that AP anymore. Maybe, you can blog about it step by step with how you set it up to work in your wifi network. It would help others, with same problem with the unit, and save their time and hair/sanity in the process.

  5. After more playing i've realised one of the problems with this box is it seems to need to be using the same WiFi channel on both the incoming signal and the outgoing signal. Can't say for sure this will affect all boxes but is def something to consider for anyone else reading this page having issues with their box. Basically you need to know the channel of the main source AP and make sure this box is set to the same channel. If anyone reading this wants to ask me any specific questions feel free to contact me at smancey@hotmail.com. Basically the user interface isn't the best on this box, but with a little effort you should be able to get it working. A great little program called 'inSSIDer' can help with analysing the WiFi networks and give you more confidence with what's going on. Hope that helps, cheers Felix, Steve

    1. Steve, you're right, it wouldn't connect but when I put the channel of the repeater to the same channel number as the host wifi, it suddenly worked. In my case, both were on channel 6.

  6. Quick question Felix, you said you got this box on the internet when you connected the direct ethernet cable. I might need to do this myself sometimes. When i tried it the other day it didn't seem to work. Did you need to change any settings on the box to get it working?

    1. I don't think I change anything... could just be the IP address of the AP? I connected the internet thru the router, then the AP is connected to the LAN of the router. I think, I set the DHCP or assigned the DHCP address to be given by both device, one is 1-100, the other is 101-200... again, I'm not sure since I gave up on that device. AP could have the IP of x.x.x.101.. Sorry if you thought I connected the internet directly to the AP.. What I meant was the ethernet port was connected to the main router.. both have DHCP..

    3. lems,
You could contact Steven on the settings. I don't have the AP unit anymore. Also, I wasn't able to make it work thru wi-fi, my AP and router are also connected thru ethernet cable at that time for them to work with internet access. That is one of the reason, I returned the device for something else, since it beats my purpose.

  8. At first nahirapan din ako mag configure. If you just want to extend the signal range of your main AP you can configure the CDR king AP's WDS settings in bridge mode so the two AP's could communicate properly. Then all the wireless settings of the repeater should be the same as the main AP. Makikita mo lang ung main AP mo if you check for wireless connection thru your phone/laptop pero boosted na ung signal. :)

  11. hey guys, I was able to connect this thing with my linksys, but I think there's something wrong with the routing...

this model was able to connect to my master ap, but then it's not providing any internet... when I run diagnostics and use ping, the box can ping google, but my computer can't... any ideas why this is happening? the router doesn't have any nat or routing options... please help

  12. ok guys I was able to find a fix... I tried telneting to the ap and luckily you can, it's running busybox 1.12.1... login with your admin creds

apcli0 is the interface that goes to the net
br0 goes to the private network

my linux is rusty, luckily I still got my notes... run the following commands to make the NAT work:

    # iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o apcli0 -j MASQUERADE
    # iptables -A FORWARD -i br0 -j ACCEPT

    gumana siya.

    2. Johnny, I'm not good with linux and no knowledge on NAT. If I go to telnet do i need to input the whole key "# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o apcli0 -j MASQUERADE " and press enter then input the 2nd "# iptables -A FORWARD -i br0 -j ACCEPT" and restart the unit?

  13. sure no prob. you know it's just marketed as a repeater but i'm pretty sure you can also use it as a dsl modem, may pppoe support siya. the only problem is, the fs is readonly which is typical for most appliances like this. so everytime nagrestart siya you got to telnet and reconfigure. so kung sino may oras diyan, somebody hack this box :D the web/cgi interface needs alot of improvement too..
